State Mu Alpha Theta Math Contest
Eleventh Annual Fall Classic
Saturday November 3rd, 2007

Dear Coach,
The eleventh annual Mu Alpha Theta Fall Classic will be held at Thomas Jefferson High School on Saturday, November 3rd, 2007.  The contest is designed to reward excellence in mathematics.  You do NOT have to be a member of Mu Alpha Theta to come to the contest.  The format will be as follows:

9:00 to 9:30 Registration in the cafeteria
9:30 to 9:40 Opening directions
9:45 to 11:00 Individual Ciphering
11:00 to 12:30  Individual Test (MATHCOUNTS style) test
12:35 to 1:35 Lunch.  (We will have a snack bar available or there are numerous fast food locations near TJ)
1:40 to 2:10 Team Test
2:30 to 3:00 Awards

All tests may cover any mathematical topic.  The individual test will be 50 problems multiple choice.  The Team test will consist of teams made up of 4 students.  The divisions are 11th/12th and 9th/10th.  A 9th or 10th grade student may be on an 11th/12th team.  However, if you want to mix 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students, they must compete in the 11th/12th-grade division.  The team test will be consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Ciphering will be ten rounds of two problems done individually with 4 minutes to solve both.  Each problem is worth 2 points with the last four problems worth 2.5 each.

Individuals or teams of 2 or 3 may compete as well.  Individuals will be eligible for trophies on the Individual and ciphering tests.  Overall team awards are a combination of all 4 scores, so it would be extremely difficult for a team of 1, 2 or 3 to win a team award.
Awards—On the Individual test and ciphering, trophies will be awarded to the top ten individual places in each grade level, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.  Any Junior High student will compete in the 9th grade division. On the team tests, the winning teams will be the combination of the four Individual scores, the four ciphering scores, and the score of the team test. The trophies will be given to the top ten teams in the 11th/12th and 9th/10th grade divisions.
Costs—The cost is $35 per team of four, or $10 for an individual (checks made out to Thomas Jefferson High School) PO’S ARE NOT ACCEPTED.  All money will be collected the day of the competition.

The student names and the number of teams are due Wednesday, October 24th.  If you have any questions, call Tom Norris at 253-945-5655. EMAIL
